Endocrinologists: What we do.

The medical specialty of Endocrinology focuses on endocrine and metabolic disorders. The endocrine system is composed of organs (glands) that produce hormones which regulate certain body functions. Metabolism consists of the biochemical processes in the body that cause the breaking down of some substances (e.g. food) and the building up of others (e.g., fat, muscle or bone).

An endocrinologist primarily diagnoses, evaluates and treats conditions related, but not limited, to:

  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • hormone issues (including estrogen and testosterone levels)
  • decreased libido (sex drive)
  • erectile dysfunction
  • menopause
  • osteoporosis
  • thyroid disorders
  • parathyroid disorders
  • adrenal disorders
  • pituitary disorders
  • abnormal growth and development in children

In addition, the field of practice may overlap other medical specialties in the evaluation and treatment of patients who have various conditions including:

  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • abnormal cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels
  • kidney stones
  • infertility
  • polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • female hirsutism (excessive facial/body hair)

Endocrinology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine. An endocrinologist must complete four years of medical school followed by a year of internship and at least 2 years of residency in Internal Medicine. The physician must then pass a board examination for certification in that field. In addition, a minimum of two years of fellowship (training) in Endocrinology must be completed followed by the passing of a rigorous written examination to demonstrate specialized knowledge and skills. Certification is conferred by the American Board of Internal Medicine Subspecialty Board of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Our medical practice has seven board certified endocrinologists.
